Susan Senior: «Women are becoming more popular across all things construction, as it helps provide a service to everyone not just to roofers»

Susan Senior is Branch Manager at Rinus Roofing in Bradford. She has been working in the company for eleven years, pushing sales, profit and margin within her branch, meeting agreed targets, providing support to all her staff and overlooking all office and yard processes.

What does the International Women’s Day mean to you?

It isn’t just a day for me I am forever proud where women have come in regards to social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. Although we have come so far, I strongly believe there is more to do, we must continue to acknowledge the value and impact that women give so we are forever examples to the young girls in this world today.

How the role of women has changed in your sector?

Our roofing industry has always been male dominated however I believe women are becoming more popular across all things construction, as it helps provide a service to everyone not just to roofers. It helps with large projects that involve home owners and contractors, as a woman’s view is now welcome to help in decision making so outcomes are equal and not male dominated which has had a great impact.

Have you ever found any difficulties in your career for being a woman?

Yes, us as women will always come across customers who feel more confident speaking to a male colleague, however I beleive it’s about the customers experience and I will not shy away from ignorance. This drives me to prove the customers wrong and that we are all full of knowledge regardless of gender.

What you would consider to be your most significant contribution to Burton Roofing?

I provide a positive and knowledgeable service to both my staff and customers. I maintain a happy, educated working enviroment where everyone feels equal and valued.

Why you would recommend working at your company to other women?

Everyone is treated, paid and promoted equally which shows in the amount of long serving staff. Opportunities are given to gain qualifications and further your career which comes from a fantastic management who listen and want the best out of everyone by providing skills and training where possible.
